Stay driven when you’re not motivated.
Motivation doesn’t accomplish goals; being driven does. But how do you stay driven when there are so many roadblocks trying to knock you off course?
The answer is simple. You need to know your “why.” Your “why” is the foundation for the goal and fuels your drive. Without knowing your “why” you won’t have anything to go back to when the road gets bumpy, you’ll quit. If you are struggling with your goal (doesn’t have to be fitness related), take 5-10 minutes on this exercise. Ask yourself why the goal is important to you. If you want to dig deeper, ask yourself why one more time about the answer to your first why.
Here are some personal examples.
Owning a gym isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. However, if I remember my “why,” I know the grass isn’t greener on the other side. When the going gets tough, I remember that my why is that I want the freedom to create something, I don’t want to sit in a cubical, I don’t want to dress “business casual,” and it is the best way I know how to provide a good life for my daughter.
I own a gym, you probably think working out, and eating healthy comes naturally to me. I’ll be honest, its a lot easier after 15 years of doing it, but it wasn’t at first. I was married and overweight and partying way too hard. I knew that it wasn’t fair to myself, my family. I felt like sh*t, and I didn’t feel attractive, and I had no confidence, and I knew I needed a change. For me, my why for staying healthy is less of a reason and more of a feeling. I remember how I felt, what I looked like, and that fuels me to keep fit!
So if you haven’t already, take some time for yourself and write down the reason why. When you find yourself struggling, always go back to your why when you want to quit!
