How did you hear about BearFitness and how long have you been a member?
I had been contemplating joining a CrossFit gym for a while. I found out about BearFitness through a neighbor and I have been a member for 4 years.
When you’re not at the gym what are you doing?
Besides work, my life is basically devoted to my 2 kids (3 and 1 years old). Otherwise, I try and play or watch whenever sports I can.
You’ve lost about 30lbs. since you started, what was your motivation and what lifestyle changes did you have to make?
When I was asked what my goals were when I first joined I said “to be cut”. It wasn’t really about losing weight but I wanted to look more toned and defined. While working out helped, I really didn’t see results until I addressed my diet. I lost some weight by cutting back on sugar and processed foods, but the real results started when I followed the zone diet. My body composition changed dramatically once I followed the diet for a couple months. Before I was starving myself from carbohydrates and the zone diet really optimized my food intake. I started to treat food as the gasoline to my body. While it does take some enjoyment out of eating the results have been worth it and I do have a cheat meal or two once a week to keep my sanity.
What is the hardest workout you have done and why?
The hardest workout was 16.5. It was 27-21-15-9 of calorie row and thrusters. That workout literally took everything out of me including my desire to exist. Because it was the CrossFit Open with the crowd cheering everyone on, I pushed myself beyond belief and probably laid on the floor for 5 minutes after. What was the last vacation you went on?
About a month ago my wife and I went to Cancun along with a number of neighbor couples. There were no kids so it was very relaxing. We hardly did anything except sit at the pool or beach.
Anything else you would like to add?
I love BearFitness. Being able to do a different workout and do it with a group of like-minded people is a wonderful thing. You push yourself harder than you ever would working out yourself. I find that I typically crave the WOD to relieve stress from the day and rejuvenate myself. I love the fact that there is always something to improve and get better at. Whether it is getting toes-to-bar, handstand push-ups or muscle-ups, CrossFit allowed me to add some fun skills I never imagined. The coaches are great too. The level of thought that is put into the programming is tremendous. It feels great to be a part of this community.
